Finale Post

For the Finale of Art & Society Museum trips, i decided to got to the Queens Museum. I choose this art piece from Zhang Hongtu because it stuck out to me the most from the rest of his works. Four trees in foreground in the oil on canvas made me think of my family when i first saw it. the two taller trees being parents. the small twisted looking tree in the middle being my twisted younger sister and the tall tree on the far left being me. there is also a lot going on in the painting, for starters, the bottom of the painting features predominatlty warm colors and the top is made up of cool colors. the trees are settled on a large rock that is covered with green leaves. there is overlapping, the land in the back of the tree has a place for shelter/shade on the right side of the foreground. the background, aka the mountain area, was painted with diagonal lines. it looks as if it is going to crash down of something, which i thought was very cool. the middle ground, is of a small lan mass with trees. i feel as if Zhang Hongtu painted the bottom of the paintinf during the day because when i look at it, i think the sun is shining, but when i look above, its very cloudly and dark. When I first came to your class, i was ready to change majors, quickly and without a question. I had not been into art since elementary school, I had the sketch books and everything (my parents thought i could make something of myself with it). But then i had no choice but to stay, my laziness got the better of me, for the better. Quickly, i began to realize again why i was so into art and how it never really left me, i just turned it into editing. i learned a lot of things from your class, like going to museum frequently is not a rich persons thing, learned the notes you gave us in class. i also learned how powerful art can be in this world. i also see things a lot differently now as well, its not just liking a picture anymore, its why it was made, how. and what is really going on it for me. Your class has been the best part of my first semester in college.

Creative Project #1

This mini photo collage is called "Fits Stereotype?".  I given the piece this name because of the stereotype that I feel society sees me as. The question mark is there because it's not true and I want people to think about what they are actually going to see before the collage is shown to them. For the image I used myself, my clothes, my phone, and Photoshop (nothing in the collage has been altered in size). For the image on the left side I turned myself into what today's society feel is a thug or a black male how is just up to no good. How I choose to take the picture is how I feel people who judge me based of that stereotype everyday. I made the image on the left side completely black, and made the other one white because that is the way people make their judgments (black & white). They base it off of prior knowledge (history, past situations, etc.). I feel that people do this because it's either easier for them to just believe that people of that race act/live this way or they're racist. the image on the far left side is of me, a person who is goofy, smart, complex, and educated. I am not a thug, I prove people wrong everyday by showing them that. It feels good to make the people who look down upon you feel stupid, when they realize that you don't fit the moled that they wanted to believe that you were apart of. I made the images on the left and right white because I wanted to make silhouettes of my goofy side. I feel that stereotypes will always exist in society because we have a pyramid of hierarchy and we won't let go of our preconceived ideas on other races of people.

El Museo del Barrio Essay

Dear Rodriguez Calero,
I recently visited El Museo del Barrio, with my art class and was captivated by all of the art pieces in your exhibition. Classmate of mine told me that some of your art was modern art. All of which I felt were relatable but going back toward the entrance of your exhibition, I saw this painting (pictured above), Preternatural, 2008. What exactly does the title, Preternatural mean? One thing that threw me for a loop was the label; under the title of the work it read “Acrollage on canvas”.  What is that exactly? Is it art and collage? The art piece itself was something I have never seen. It is very unique and like the rest of your pieces modern. The piece features both cool colors and warm. The eyes are very modern and I say the nose is cut from renaissance art, the mouth and torso has been painted differently to throw people off. What made you decide to this? Are the eyes and the rest of the body from the same reference just from different times? I find the painting even more interesting as write this letter to you. There is also overlapping present in the painting, there is a layer of an article present that you painted beneath the painting. I noticed when I looked closer at the head (the lightest part within the peacock feathers). Why did you place peacock feathers around the person? Does it have to do with the title Preternatural? The lower body I find interesting, because it has a very different texture from the torso. It is like the texture disappears but the pattern is still present. I noticed a quote of yours that was placed on the wall of your exhibition that could be missed if visitors are only focused on what meets the eye on ground level.  Your quote read as follows, “My questioning or reinterpretation of bible stories define the influence of Catholicism, in my work. I take traditions from the past and present a more modern, symbolic image, which is approachable and identifiable for a new generation”. This sums up what I saw in your amazing paintings. But why does the bible have such an influence on your work? Your work has definitely a modern vibe that for me is different because when it comes to art history, it’s always about the past (1400- late 1800). You don’t really get to learn about today’s art.
Your fan,

Blog Post 5/6

Title: African Manifest
Artist: Unknown
Date: Early 21st Century
Geography/Culture: USA, New York/African
Medium: Wood, Metal, Clothing material
Demension: Unknown

In my home there are many objects of importance to me and the rest of my family. This closet especially holds a lot of value in many ways. It holds our African clothing, though the majority of it is my mother’s. the rest are my sister, dad, and myself. When go into this closet when we go out to African events, and sometimes when we go to church. I don’t really go into the closet all that much because I don’t have as much African clothes as I used to when I was a kid. They are very expensive to make. But when I thought about the assignment many things came to mind, the closet stuck out to me because it makes me feel closer to my family and apart of Gambian culture. I may be an American but my other roots are also important, my family back in Africa don’t want my sister and I to forget those roots. Our roots are what make us different from other people around us, it allows us to bring something different to the table. What we share becomes new knowledge to someone who doesn’t understand. This closet in my home has different clothes that people wont see being sold in an H&M store. There are other cultures in the world with different clothing as well that wont be seen in other big name stores. Dana writes “surely a function of a public art museum is the making of life more interesting joyful and wholesome; and surely a museum cannot very well exercised that function unless it relates itself quite closely to the life it should be influencing” a museum is supposed to feature history and art but it should also be able to feature art that is being made in the present. American Museum should also feature art that shows people and its visitors that it is a melting pot and not a country that focus mainly on European art.

Metropolitan Museum Essay

During the trip to the Metropolitan Museum, I found most the of the art pieces there very intriguing. But the two pieces I chosen that intrigued me the most were Vaprio d'Adda, 1744 created by Bernardo Bellotto (Top painting), and Tomorrow is Never, 1955 created by Key Sage (Bottom painting). These two artworks are approximately two hundred-eleven years old. Both the Vaprio d'Adda and Tomorrow is never are oil paintings. I haven't noticed any major similarities besides that fact, and that the artists featured dark colors in their paintings. It may be hard to notice in the Vaprio d'Adda but the dark colors were used for the shadows and the clouds (The rest of it is made up of warm colors). Bernardo Bellotto painting  "... is the village of Canonica d'Adda, north of Milan, and in the center is the villa melzi,..." he painted it for the Count Simonetta. The sun is setting in the west in the painting, and in the foreground there are people outside of the village chilling and having a good time. Two of the men that are outside the village are pointing at what appears to be a woman on standing in a small boat, while a man rows. Then the middle ground features the beautiful painted building structures and the very large green trees. Overall to me Bernardo captured the site very well, it could pass as a photograph in my book. This is very much representational art. Key Sage oil painting, is way darker than Bernardo, it does not compare (Yin & Yang). What attracted to this painting right away was the structure rather than beauty, which is what I found with Vaprio d'Adda. Key Sage was a powerful female surreal artist, she did many art pieces that included ".... architectural scaffolding, latticework structures, and draped figures, to evoke feelings of entrapment and dislocation..." The sky in this painting is gloomy and you can tell that there is sadness wanting to pour out of it but it's being kept in. Prior to her creating this painting key lost her husband of a sudden death, and soon after she made this painting she committed suicide. This painting to me felt like a cry for help with all of the dark colors already, so learning that she committed suicide didn’t come as a real shock with the lost of her love. Seeing these two different art pieces, Vaproi d’Adda from the eighteenth century, and Tomorrow is Never from the twentieth century made me look into myself in a way because I wouldn’t of chosen them if I didn’t feel they had any significance to me. I feel they represent two emotions that constantly battle inside of me happiness and sadness. I feel that they were placed in the museum because these two artists made remarkable pieces that caused people to think and feel a certain emotion. The same can be said about any art piece right, but its clear that many people recognized their art pieces specifically and that’s why theirs were placed in the museum so that others can see and feel the emotion from their art pieces.
