Creativity Project #1

This collage, sums up the basic and essential elements of my life right now. Not only does it symbolize me, but it created me. The pictures above also motivated me to search and tap my full potential in being a talented, modest, human being.  The ideas that make me, is what I like to do. For instance, the idea of creating and performing music is a big factor of who I am in my life. Also, the idea-no; the instinct of spending time with my family and the reason for who I am today. The only object in the college is purposely my piano. That is no doubt the most prized and important object I have in my possession. In today’s society, I feel that I break a whole bunch of a stereotypes and go beyond the limitations of what an Asian male like myself is suppose to be doing. One of the stereotypes that I do break is for a Filipino and/or Asian is being very conservative. For me, it is the complete opposite; a bunch of my friends observed and seen that I’ve been pretty out and easy going to communicate with. I’m less timid than what my physical image may perceive. An important stereotype that I actually embrace is my academic level. Just like in class last Wednesday, we saw an Asian kid with an A+ paper in his hand. Pretty stereotypical, except that would not be me. I am a B/A- student that actually does struggle with academics in many areas while juggling a music career. I’d rather be that than be a one dimensional person. My parents came to this country for my brother and I to create our own special image and to live life the way we want. Not to be another product of our society’s environment. The artistic decisions I made was why the pictures are in certain areas. Having a selfie on the left hand side purposely. It is on the left side because I write with my left hand and I chose that picture because it is the most recent nice picture of myself. The picture on the top left defies that I love to travel. That was in Disney World two years ago, February 2014. The second picture is my family. The third and fourth is some of my several shots of performing. The top two iconic, while I saw the bottom two due to the best for lasts. I chose those pictures because those were the best ones that symbolized who I am at this point of my life. I want the viewer to see what I love to do and to see versatility in me being outgoing, my interest in fashion, my family, and my passion for music. My image challenge stereotype in relation to what Stuart Hall says my pictures are much more unexpected and eccentric to what is expected for an Asian male to present.

Museum Essay #2

Sunday, November 1st, 2015

Dear Glendalys Medina,

Hello, this is one of your fans. My name is Neil Diestro. Recently, I have took a trip to the El Museo Del Barrio on the upper east side of Manhattan and encountered one of your interesting artworks. I saw your shoe boxes. Also, known as “Boombox #2.” This was no doubt the most interesting piece of art I have seen in El Museo. One of the reasons is because of the various materials that was made to assemble the boombox. From the label, the materials that was used was sneaker boxes, hinges, plexiglass, laces, and pipes. Not even pencil, pastel, or even watercolor was used to create this. Honestly, that was a good call on your part. My personal favorite material that you used was the laces. It is also the material that I do not totally understand. Was the laces that was wrapped around the front part of the selective shoe boxes a creative symbol to show what the speakers of the boombox would look like? Or was it there just for your selected style? It must’ve been a very interesting yet, tedious process in creating the Boombox #2. One thing that I’ve noticed is that four out of the nine shoe boxes is the Puma brand. Is that because that is one of your favorite sneaker brands? Or is it supposed to symbolize what could possibly be popular brand back in your hometown Ponce, Puerto Rico? There are the major brands in the sneaker box too like Nike and Converse. But I also noticed that Adidas was not in the sneakerbox. Possibly no reason? Just irony? Just because there are only about three different brands in the plexiglass does not downgrade the creativity of the artwork at all. It is probably your selective preference and the brands may symbolize something about your own personality. One day I would like to find out. Not only is this piece of art creative, but I really enjoy the different cultures it can represent. Especially since the classic Nike box incorporated in the boombox, the urban community all around New York City can connect and even appreciate that since the majority of us owns at least a pair of that brand. The urban community can also connect to the Converse boxes too since it is a classic basketball sneaker and also since basketball is a huge part of the community around here. Not only do I feel like you are communicating towards New York City urban terrains, but also your fellow countrymen back home. Ms. Medina, I feel this maybe a long shot, but due to the shoeboxes and the boombox, this artwork probably symbolizes how you grew up or how a lot of the youth grows up in Puerto Rico. Using what they have. The limited pairs of sneakers, and using the eighties style boombox, to listen to music and have a great time. There are many different points of views that I can see through my lenses with this artwork, but hopefully I get to encounter your intentions and direct creativity towards Boombox #2.

Your fan,

Neil Diestro

Title: Zaja

Artist: Zaja
Date: 2007
Geography/Culture: Germany
Medium: Silverware
Dimensions: unknown
Source: designed by Zaha Hadid produced by Wuerttembergische Metallwarenfabrik (Germany)

Objects get there meaning mainly from an origin and a purpose. The origin of an object is important because the location can vary the style and the intention of the object. The purpose of the object is also crucial because there is no such thing as an object that was created and/or produced for no reason. If an object is made, it can also be used to symbolize a potential deeper meaning. Some objects has deeper meanings than others, while some have more importance than others. An object has some level of convenience, no matter what and how it is used and/or created. It is not really who assigns value, but why it has value. Yes, the person who has created and/or produced the object has to have full credit and a certain level of importance, but it the object isn’t made to reflect the expression of the creator. The purpose of the object is to have convenience and meaning. In other words, it the creator and/or the person who assigns value is not the nucleus of the object. Just like the silverware on top of this paragraph, it is not a traditional museum of art, but the aesthetic value and the purpose of it gives it the least name of an object.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Trip Essay

The trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art trip was a very memorable one because there was a wide range of artwork from many iconic artists. The majority of the artwork that was presented in all exhibits that was available was very impressive. But, there was two pieces of artwork that myself gave extreme interest towards. To be specific, they are sculptures. One of the sculptures was from the Italian Renaissance exhibit. The other was in the Greek Mythology exhibit. These two sculptures share a number of similarities and a few differences. One thing that both of them do share for sure is creativity.

The sculpture from the Italian Renaissance that I got the opportunity to encounter is very standard and traditional to Italy’s history. It is a soldier's battle armor. The wall label that came with the sculpture has the title of ‘Armor.’ The armor is made of steel and leather. It weighs approximately 45 lbs (20.04 kg). This armor was actually made in by a German, possibly from Lower Saxony around 1540-50. It was from the Bashford Dean Memorial Collection and was a gift from Helen Fahnestock Hubbard. Even though this was a typical appearance of a knight, it still shines brightly in any light that it encounters. The term used for that is called “white armor.” The armor can also be used back then for personal use. It didn’t necessarily mean that armor is only used for the average fighting men. The little pieces of leather in the armor is located wrapped around the waist. Almost like a belt and also located at the groin area of the sculpture. Even though this is kind of plain to the regular viewer, the background and history that this possesses makes up for it to be a fine piece of artwork.

Greek Mythology was the second most interesting exhibit that I encountered during my visit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When I first stepped into the exhibit, I saw elegance and class. But when I saw this sculpture, I managed to have high interest in it. Just because of the height, and that there was a missing left hand and head. The sculpture is titled ‘Bronze statue of man.’ It is Greek, Hellenistic. It may have been made around the mid-2nd-1st century BC. It was a gift to the museum from Renee E., and Robert A. Belfer in 2001. On the wall label, the MET described this statue ‘honorific.’ The reason why they call it honorific is because just about any sculpture that was made back then was mainly a symbol for the highest honor. His stance seems to be like this man is attempting to grab an object or have an object being handed to. One line from the wall label that was significant was “The horizontal bands that decorate the fabric, which may have been painted or gilded, are a rare detail.”

Both of these sculptures has similarities and differences to one another. For instance, Armor is made from steel and leather. While the Bronze statue of a man was made of bronze. The stance of both artworks are very different too. The sculpture from the Greek Mythology exhibit represented a higher level of elegance and had a more natural feeling. While the Italian Renaissance sculpture had a more muscular nature, but a much more stiff stance. One thing that they do have in common is that the man color that both of them share is gray. The reason why I selected these two works is because not only does it have history behind both, but because both sets the standards of what to expect in both exhibits. When someone would picture both exhibits, an artwork similar to both of these sculptures would most likely come up in their mind. This is also the reason why I felt that these two sculptures were mainly in the museum. The experience of viewing these two works from different eras was positive. It felt like I stepped into two different nations.

Jina Mahavira, 11th-12th Century, Sculpture.
 Jina Mahavira, 11th - 12th century. Bronze, 23 3/4 x 18 1/4 in. (60.4 x 46.3 cm). Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Museum Collection, 34.752. Creative Commons-BY
The specifications for this interesting sculpture made by Jina Mahavira is that its medium is bronze. Possibly, the location it was created was Karnataka, India. It was made in the 11th-12th century. The dimensions this sculpture possesses is 23.75 x 18.25 inches. The category it falls under is 'Asian Art.' Through my search of finding an interesting figurative work of art, in my opinion this is the one that stand out the most out of all the other sculptures and paintings I managed to find. The reason is because of what it may symbolize to a certain Indian culture. The fact that this person is on a pedestal most likely means he has some sort of high power. Jina Mahavira created this sculpture so it can be a reference for the Digambaras. The Digambaras are monks located in Karnataka, India. Behind the person is a decorative arch. The arch is specifically called a torana. The torana in is high arched just above his skull. The head piece on top of the figure may not be a crown. It might be a traditional head piece in the monk culture.  This piece of figurative art is representational because it represents the Digambaras. In my opinion, they maybe an idealized work of art because of it being created in the 11th-12th century and us only knowing a vague understanding today if the work of art is what an average Digambara really looked like back then. It could've been stylized, but only if for sure that was how one looked like back then.

Blog Post #1

Believe it or not colleagues, in my eyes this is art. If you guys here me out and look into my point of view of why this is a form of art, you'll at least understand my well thought out point of view and maybe even agree. This tree has recently been in my sight. It is just around my neighborhood and a number of them has grown since the beginning of Spring 2015. It is not just to tree that makes it art. It is the symbolization and the purpose for the number of trees being grown. The botanist's critical thinking in planting them must've also had an element of artistic feeling in that person's instinct. The botanist/artist must've made it to make a positive impact towards the community, and to express its passion for nature. It is just like what an artist needs to become great at it's work, passion and expression. The tree's form is not as eccentric as others. It is not perfect. There are two branches from a dead tree holding thin branch so it would not collapse. It may look physically weak, but artistically it is not. The symbolism behind the growth and process of this tree, it is just as important as an oak that you would find in the suburbs. A regular spectator just passing through the neighborhood maybe just see a tree. Myself, if someone was to see it in my point of view, growing tree is a sign of hope and positivity. Especially for the simple observation of not seeing much nature at an urban location. Even the little things around our sight, may have more significance than something that is obvious. Sometimes, there is art and beauty in front of your face and you would not even notice.

INTRO post

Hi guys, my name is Neil-Jeffrey Diestro. Just call me Neil though. I'm born and raised from the Bronx, New York. Yet, I am the only one from my family that was born in the Bronx. My mother, father, and brother was born back in the Philippines. Two things that I like to do is being a musician and being a music director. My favorite food has hands down Texas cheeseburgers. Texas cheeseburgers contains bacon and at least one egg on the cheeseburger. Nice to have classes with all of you guys this semester!
