You Are Creative Whether You Like It Or NOT

Dennis Yu
Art and Society Essay
12/1/15

There are many people who believe they don’t have creativity and isn’t able to change that. Everyone is unique, some may to more creative than others but everyone is creative in their own way. Being creative isn’t just about having a talent in painting or able to think of poems and many people think being creative is just such painting and poems, but it’s so much more. Being creative is adding your ideas on anything, using your imagination to change a feature is being creativity. Everyone makes unique decisions in life that they won’t even realize they are being creative. Most people doubt that they have creativity in them but later on they will find out that they have creativity ideas and the only thing stopping them is themselves.
This idea about people not believing they are creative is important to me because I was/am one of those people. I always assume I was a simple person and didn’t have any creativity in me, but I was wrong. Even though I didn’t see it at first, Professor Dahlia Elsayed did. The reason I believe that I wasn’t a creative person is because I didn’t have amazing ideas or any artistic talent, but being creativity wasn’t just about that and I realized it later on. This is why this topic is important to me, letting other people who has a similar way of thinking they are creativity if they try. Everyone is creative and even the little things such as deciding what to wear for the day or posting a picture on social media. You don’t realize it but the everyday decisions count as creativity.
To show people that they are creative is simple but difficult, having a big banner with the words “You Are Creative Whether You Like It Or Not” but the difficult part is having them believe what they just read. The words that are written on the banner would be just the outline of the letters. The banner will be hung on the wall of the room arms reach so people are able to add their own creativity ideas on it. Anybody is allowed to add anything they want on it to make the banner more creative and artistic. It would be on a large piece of paper, black outlining of the letters, and color pencils on the side where you can spread  your creativity throughout the paper.
The banner would be hung up on the wall of an art classroom so as soon as you walk in the classroom, you are able to see it. I chose the wall because the first thing everyone does when they walk inside the room is look around. The banner should be the first thing for them too see so that they can think about the quote. This banner will be impactful because there are many people who don’t think they are creativity enough when they actually have great ideas. This banner is for them to be more open about being creative and let them express what they want. It is meant for everyone to see, it should make the audience rethink about themselves. This banner will reach out to people who doubt themselves, make them realize their imagination is much more creative then they think. First they walk into the classroom and see this big banner that says, “You Are Creative Whether You Like It Or Not” and think to themselves about how they feel towards this saying. While they think about being non creative, other people will start talking about the banner and then start a conversation about their imagination. Then those who doubted themselves about their creativity will draw or sign anything on the banner with their unique symbol.

I hope believe will start believing in themselves more about sharing their unique ideas and stop thinking that they aren’t creative. Everyone is creative in their own way and I want them to know that and to show others how creative they can be. I am one of those people who need to believe in myself more and stopping doubting my creativity. So I hope others who have thought to themselves as a non creative person, they changed their mind about themselves after they have seen the quote. They have to focus on their thoughts and express their creative side to show people how they think art is to them. Believing in yourself and show your creativity to the people around you.

Project

This is a self-portrait of me in the city and I’m going to show my “complex” identity with this. I put quotes around complex because I’m actually the complete opposite of the word complex, I like to keep things simple. Since I am a simple person, I just used one photo without making collages or put art because it may be confusing. The ideas that make myself who I am and who I'm going to be is in this photo by explaining what I'm working towards. I’m not sure if a picture is considered art but if it is, I would consider myself as the art in progress. In this photo you are able to see me in a nice view of the city, this is a big part of my identity/future identity because I want to live a luxuries life. I believe you can tell a lot by a person about how they want to live in the future and by the way they achieve their goals. Another part of the photo I can tell you about my identity is the way my face is in this picture. I believe I am a serious person that only jokes around very little. Stuart Hall talks about stereotypes and I believe the biggest stereotype about Chinese people is that we are cheap and we have restaurants or stores. That stereotype doesn't apply to me because I want to do something bigger, I want to be in some type of business industry. This is how I want people see to me and that's why I represented myself in a city because the city has a lot of meaning.

P.S I didn't draw this. It was just a photo with a drawing effect.

El Museo Del Barrio Essay

Dear Edgar Ruiz Zapata,
I saw your artwork at the El Museo Del Barrio called the “Carro De Piragua” and I think it is very unique. The “Carro De Piragua” is very different from the other parts at the museum and that is why I enjoyed looking at it so much. The materials were very creative with using a baby carriage wheels and how the shape is overall. The bottles were all neatly placed and you can see all the different flavors in the bottles. This work of art is interesting and I have some questions for you about the “Carrp De Piragua”. Was this a childhood memory that inspired you to make this snow cone cart? Everyone has their favorite memory as a child and was waiting for the snow cone cart to come your favorite memory. You can see the “Carro De Piragua” is meant for selling to kids because of how cheap the price was. Even though 10 cents may be different from what 10 cents is today, but it looks like it was more for children. All these flavors of the cart and there is so many to choose from, but what was your favor flavor? If you had more than one favorite flavor which one would it be? Since there are so many flavors to choose from did you ever mix two or more flavors together? I’m sure the snow cones were very good but did you ever get sick of them. After all it was just shaved ice and corn syrup with some food coloring. This snow cone cart would be at the same place same time on a hot day, did you and all your friends go together and enjoy the snow cones together? If this or isn’t your childhood memory, what inspired you to make the “Carro De Piragua”? Everyone has to have some type of inspiration to make their art and what was your inspiration? Is the “Carro De Piragua” a way of showing the new generation how the snow cone carts looked back in the day? It seems like you wanted to show us that this was one of the great things about living in a Spanish neighborhood. The “Carro De Piragua” is a nice replica of the snow cone carts back in 1970. You put a lot of detail in your favorite memory and I’m sure that you enjoyed those moments you had a snow cone very much. Was that one of the biggest inspiration for making this work of art?

Title: Bow Tie
Artist: Unknown
Date: June 5, 2015
Geography/Culture: United States, New York
Medium: Fabric
Dimensions: Length - 6 Inches Width - 2 Inches
Source: Bow Tie

Every object has a meaning and the way the object gets their meaning is from how much value it is to them personally. Every object has a different value to each person and that is what makes it so special because that has meaning to you and only you. Value is different for everyone because the importance of my object may to useless to others and others objects may not be so important to me. When you visit a museum, you see lots of amazing paintings and sculptures but you won’t see the objects we hold dear or something similar. Our objects aren’t worth millions of dollars to people but they hold a high value to us. Some objects are what you call priceless, even though the object isn’t as expensive as the paintings in museum but it means for to us. In John Cotton Dana’s essays he says, “Art museum objects were not chosen for their beauty or for their help they might give in developing good taste in the community, but for their rarity, their likeness to objects found in European museums, and for their cost.” This quote means that the objects in museums take rarity and high price for beautiful. The objects that are expensive are more appealing because of their price value. I believe if they they made the items in museums free then they would lose its value because it doesn’t really mean anything special to a certain someone. That is why objects that we hold close to our hearts has more value than museum items.
Everyone has a special item or object in their lives and my is my bow tie from my high school prom. This bow tie was a gift that I for my prom from my prom date. No alterations have been made to the bow tie and it stays the same from the day I received this gift. This bow tie matched my prom suit perfectly and I didn’t use it for anything else. I picked this object because this bow tie is one of the most important things to me and has many unforgettable memories. An important thing to tell the viewer about this object that it is a symbol for something you really care about and will always keep safe with you. Special important items should always be kept safe because they can make you randomly smile by making you think of the special moments. This bow tie may be just a normal regular bow tie to everyone else but this bow tie is worth much more to me. An item is just an item if it has no story behind it. You keep the item and you can always remember that story. John Cotton Dana’s essay says, “As the collections were of very great value -- consisting usually of originals which no money could replace, which should therefore be guarded with the utmost care -- the first thought in regard to them was their preservation; their utilization being a secondary and rather remote affair.” This means that if you have a precious item that is very close to you, money cannot buy it because it is priceless. You can’t trade money for a special memory and you will never let the item get damage. This quote relates to my bow tie because I wouldn’t trade this for anything because it was a gift from someone special and it’s priceless.

MET Essay

In the MET there was many different types of art to explore and look at, but the most interesting art to me were these Chinese Bowls/Trays. These bowls and trays are very different from what we have today because of the time period they were made. The bowl on the left is named “Bowl with Children Among Vines” and it was made in 960-1127 during the Northern Song Dynasty. The one on the right is a tray named “Tray with Dragon and Chinese Characters” made in 1522-1566 during the Jiajing time period. Both of the two items were from China and but they were made from different materials. The “Bowl with Children Among Vines” was made from stoneware and the “Tray with Dragon and Chinese Characters” was made from carved red lacquer. These works of art are about 500 years apart from each other and they do have their similarities and differences. They are similar because both of them have very unique carvings and meanings to them. They do have their differences as well, both are made from very different materials and both do have carvings but they are very different from each other.
The “Bowl with Children Among Vines” is made out of stoneware with molded impress with dimensions of 2 ⅜ by 7 ⅛ inches. This bowl was made in the 11th-12th century in China during the Northern Song Dynasty. This artwork is very detailed because you are able to see what the title is describing. When you look at the bowl you see how much effort was put into it because of what you see inside. You can see the vines and the two children on each side of the bowl. The bowl was made in 960-1127 so it is very different looking from what we are use to today. The shape is something we are not familiar with when you look at the bowl from different angles.
The “Tray with Dragon and Chinese Character” is a carved tray made out of red lacquer. The dimensions of the tray is 2 inches in height and 14 ½ inches in diameter. The tray was made in 1522-1566 during the Jiajing period. This tray also has a lot of detail because you are able to see the carvings of many dragons and chinese characters written on it. This tray is similar to the bowl because you can see how much effort and time was put in to make this artwork, but you can see the differences too. The “Tray with Dragon and Chinese Character” was made after the “Bowl with Children among Vines” so it has more details in my opinion. You won’t see these types of trays anymore because these trays had meaning and was for important people. The trays now and the trays in ancient chinese culture is different because you don’t see carvings like that anymore.
I choose these two works of art because when I was in the MET, these stood out to me the most. I am not a big fan of art but seeing the unique carvings in these bowls and trays are interesting. I think they put these items in the museum because there is so much diversity in our country so they have art from all over the world to look at. You can experience other cultures by looking at these arts from the past. Other cultures may not have these unique detailed carvings in trays so when you look at them you are able to see what this culture is like. The MET had artwork all over the world and different time periods, so they put it on display because the new generation will be able to see how to past was since we weren’t there.

Post 4

This painting is a self-portrait of Adélaïde Labille-Guiard with her two students in the back (Marie Gabrielle Capet and Marie Marguerite Carreaux de Rosemond). This painting is oil on canvas with dimensions 83 x 59 1/2 inches. When you first look at this painting you see how the women are very classy and look very professional. The way the artist drew this painting was with a lot of details on themselves and the dresses they were wearing. This painting is representing who they are and how they looked. This painting is representational because you can see the women and they look real. You are able to tell what the painting is about and it is clear what the artist wanted to show. The style of the painting is realistic because it is a painting on women and they look like women, they don’t look like anything else. Even though the style of the painting is realistic, it is also idealized because of the way the artist drew them. The women in the painting look almost perfect with their skin and dresses. Berger says a quote saying, “Glamour cannot exist without personal social envy being a common and widespread emotion”, and I think it means that the artist made herself look better than her students because she was the teacher. She painted the painting by showing everyone that her students looked up to her and that she had a better dress and hat then her students. I also think this quote is good because in reality people who always try to make themselves better than everyone else and want to be the best. Since this painting is a self-portrait, the artist made herself look better and stands out much more than anything else in the painting. Berger’s quote does apply to this painting and life in general.

There is art all over the world. The world is art itself because of how human created it. Most things on earth all started from ideas and people who make ideas into reality. All the buildings, street, cars, and everything around us was based on someone's idea. They were thinking of designs to make a better life. When an artist see the world around them, they can get inspired to do many things because of their imagination and ideas they have. Everything will be art to them and anything can turn into art for them. For my accidental art I chose the table and its shadows. Even the table and the shadow of the table can be considered art because of the shapes and lighting. The table is a very simple object with a few shapes. There are also tables with unique shapes and has a lot of detail. The table is art itself if you look at it in an artist's point of view. They can come in many different shapes and sizes depending on how the artist transforms the simple table. Since the table is considered art, the shadow of the table is art as well. Shadows are the shape of an object from a source of light on the floor. They are art because you can see the shape of the table and its detail on the floor. If a table or object has this very unique design then the shadow will have the design as well. The shape of the shadow will never be the same if the source of light is the sun. Every moment the earth rotates so the shadow will move according to the sun ever so slightly. The shadow of the object will never be the same and I find that interesting because you will always see a new shape on the floor. That is how the earth itself is art.

Technology/Transformation Wonder Women by Dana Birnbaum is a 2-D photography made in 1978. The video is about filmmaking in the early days and see how the visual and sound effects were. This movie is much different from what we are use to because of the time period and you can see a big difference on how new media changed the way we watched movies. Over many years you can see how the software editing evolved into something much more advanced. One big difference that this video and paintings and sculptures are different is that it’s moving pictures. This film isn't art that you paint but it’s an art that people perform. It has no paint and clay but a person acting out a script written by a writer. The writer uses words to express his idea instead of painting on paper. How the film was made is also very different from painting and sculpting. For performing art for a film you have to acted it out and take multiple scenes of the same part to find what is best. You have to do many scenes and edit it together into a movie. I decided to do this post on a film because I find films more interesting than a painting. Over the years you can see how much software and effects are improving as time goes on and that is very interesting what you are able to do with a computer. In my opinion a movie has more detail and more meaning than a pictures because of the way they film it. It’s a story that the writer wants you to know and experience for yourself and wants you to see his imagination in his eyes. I really like film and it really interests me when they act everything out and put it into a movie. The movie is the art and it’s showing you a story from someone’s unique point of view.

I live in the middle of nowhere, my surrounds are houses and more houses. There is no art anywhere from where I live so that’s why i decided to do it on the Unisphere. I see the Unisphere every time I go to Flushing. The Unisphere is a 3D sculpture that is a 12 stories high globe of Earth. This sculpture is huge and you are able to see it from many places. The Unisphere is 140 feet high and 120 feet in diameter weighing in at 900,000 pounds. It is build with some of the heaviest steels in the world. They had to be very careful engineering this sculpture because it is very unbalanced. When you first walk to up the Unisphere, it will be the biggest globe you’ve ever seen. The Unisphere itself is made out of stainless steel metal and it constructed with high detail to make the Earth. When the artist (Gilmore David Clarke) made the Unisphere there was a meaning behind it called “Peace Through Understanding”. Gilmore David Clarke made the Unisphere as a symbol of peace. He wanted everyone to understand one another and all be in peace. Even though we still do not have world peace, Clarke believes it will happen. This sculpture has been up for over 50 years and it still stands today. The Unisphere is also a symbol of culture because in Queens we have people from all over the world. The Unisphere allows all visitors and it is a great place to visit and just enjoy what is there.

Intro

Hi, my name is Dennis and I’m from China. I lived in NYC all my life. I am a very simple person and I do not enjoy many things. But I do enjoy playing real volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. I also like spending time with people I care about. My favorite food is pizza. And I have no clue how to use this blog thing so forgive me if I did it wrong.
