The first picture seen is made by Auguste Renoir,  titled In The Meadow made in 1888-92, and the mediums used was oil on canvas. As for the second piece is by an unknown artist but was used in the Wakamiya of Kasuga Shrine, made in the 14th century (1366-92).  The mediums being used are hanging scroll; ink, color, gold, and cut on gold silk. This is considered a painting.
In comparison of both works of art they both utilize nature and feature women. It shows peace, fragility and unity. In contrast the eras, detail, structure, and mediums are completely different. In Auguste Renoir's painting "In the Meadow" you depict two brightly colored females in the foreground on soft grass, gazing upon their surroundings. This is not a realistic art piece, more classified as a representational piece in a 2D form. This is not idealized for it is not completely realistic. It is stylized because the  middle ground to the background are not done in high detail, more or less in a mesh of color. Viewing this particular art piece I had felt Extremely nostalgic, as if I had been there before. I do not know why I had felt so familiarized with it in such a personal manor.I believe due to the soft yet energetic texture in which Auguste had used, color use, temperament, and personal style that is why i had chosen this piece. The oil paint gave this piece such an energy that is the definition transcendent peace. Two girls faced away from the artist plainly enjoy from what you a springs day. As the middle ground and background overlap the textures form almost into one, but still separated. Auguste's intentions for this painting were to represent innocent youth in a meadow. He"plainly" wanted to show the grace of two young girls picking flowers on a beautiful day. The youth are one with their surroundings. Their dresses elegantly compliment the dark pigment of the grass that they lay upon underneath the shade of the tree. Postures upright, but relaxed give you the sense of tranquility to the basic surrounding. In comparison to Wakamiya of Kasuga the character is in the the profile. There is little detail and but depicted there is a whole unity. How? The gold circle around the woman unites the figures shown. This is a representational and stylized painting. As for the form it is completely 2D, there is no sense of depth or realism. The purpose the art piece was to represent the goddess Wakamiya  in a childish like form. Her presence defines deity's immaculate knowledge. The subjective interpretation of this piece is a sense of calmness. The simplicity says more at times then something with many details. A sense of wisdom, stillness, and serenity radiate from this painting.
Why I have chosen these two very different art pieces from these eras is the concept of medium, context, and culture. The style of Japanese art and French art have no similarities, but the temperament given.  Why I think these two works are in the museum is not just go conserve ancient works and classic paintings but to show the viewers what the past had to offer. In terms of interpretation of what past artist have done, the view can see aesthetics, and I think that is the most important thing to view.
