Say NOMORE to G.U.N.S

Title: G.U.N.S.
Author: Dijonai English
Materials:  black cold metal, warm sliver copper for the bullet paper, and ink.
Height: 550M

Gun laws are the cause of many violent crimes in America, the best way to resolve the problem is to change the laws so that owning an illegal firearm will imprison and sentence for the first time offenders who are caught.
I choose this topic because, guns has become such a huge issue in the the U.S. People are killed from guns every day, month and year. I want people to acknowledge the fact that people are murdered by this weapon and knowing the government doesn’t have any control over it. They had made up so many things for people who have guns to turn it in, but people weren’t giving in. They even told them they can come in with their guns “Unknown”. I believe that guns should have never been invented because it cause so many issues in our lives. I say this because on the Daily News I watched the News woman state that,  an ancient woman who was walking down the street was shot and and killed by a gun because she was caught in a random shootout. This pisses me off because that woman could be someone's daughter, mom, and/or sister. Image how they feel hearing that from a stranger on the phone in the middle of the night telling them their daughter has been killed from a random shooting. Image their pain, suffering, depression, stress, and anxiety, these things can kill a person. I worry so much because I have a huge family that goes out lot everyday to work and to goto school and I definitely don’t want to hear any bad new so I pray every morning to god for him to protect us.
Did you know? "More than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country and more than 30 people are shot and murdered each day,1/2 of them are between the ages of 18 and 35. 1/3 of them are under the age of 20.Homicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year-olds and the primary cause of death among African Americans of that age group (http://heedinggodscall.org/con tent/pfctoolkit-10). I want people to acknowledge what guns are doing to our society and how it effect the youth population. Every time I look at the News  a teenager is shot and killed by a gun because of a gang related member. This is a problem because guns are the root too all of our fear and life death.
I decided to make a sculpture of a giant gun in the middle of time square and this giant gun will be shooting out colored paper in the shape of a bullet. These colored bullet paper will be able to open for people to read a fact, opinions, and quotes about guns. I want to make my sculpture so huge because I want to obtain the News and public eye so they can broadcast my sculpture to other people who aren’t able to view my giant gun. I put it in Time Square because people all over coming from different places to here to visit and tour this area, so I’m able to have different genders, race, and ages viewing my sculpture. I want my audience to be versatile because everyone is affected by gun violence because it could be a family member of theirs and people love their families, so it would be such a heartbreaker to hear that their loved one have been shoot.
In conclusion, I believe people should try to figure out ways to solve the gun problems, but we should start with our communities first. We should give out flyers with facts about guns and give them information on how we are able to get a little start with guns in our community. We can also state that yes some people need their guns for protection, but there are other ways to protect yourself. This quote I seen in my neighborhood states, “We must start with I, before we can get to you, them, they, and we” This quote to me meant that “I” must show that I want a change in the world, but “I” must start with myself and than to others.

Who? Me?

Dijonai, EnglishWho? Me Cut and Past Transparent
My cut and past artwork is all about me and how others make a snap judgement about me. As you here I used a Calla Lily flower as my background. This Calla Lily represents me in many way that I know of because, I see myself as sweet, still growing, very tall, up lifting and  sometimes hard to figure out. I choose the Calla Lily flower because it's my favorite out of all flowers. This flowers comes from native to southern Africa in Lesotho,South Africa, and Swaziland. A mass of roots herb plant that lives for more than two years. Evergreen where rainfall and temperatures are adequate, deciduous where there is a dry season. Its preferred habitat is in streams and ponds or on the banks. It grows to 0.6–1 m (2.0–3.3 ft) tall, with large clumps of broad, arrow shaped dark green leaves up to 45 cm (18 in) long. The inflorescence's are large and are produced in spring, summer and autumn, with a pure white spathe and a yellow spadix The spadix produces a faint, sweet fragrance. Also  suited to cool climates such as the British Isles and north-western United States.
On the top of my background lay, who I am as a person. As shown above, the Transparent pictures are converse sneakers, all types of heels, outfits I love, a shy emoji, Carmelo Anthony, and Fashion. These images describes me the best because I am a shy person (Shy Emoji), I don't really like speaking to people as much, but knowing what I want in life there is always someone I have to speak too to get to what I want to achieve. (Fashion) I love fashion because it connects with me. Fashion come naturally, I never have to think about it in the ways of what wrong and correct its just a way for me to express myself and it make me feel good that I'm good at what I know about Fashion. Including the outfits and types of heels. Carmelo Anthony is my favorite basketball player he inspires me because he play this hard obstacle in his life called basketball playoffs. Basketball is something I watched with my older brother and nephews, we connect when we watch basketball. I played basketball when I was in elementary school, the only female on my team that could actually play, but this was something I was sure about because basketball was something I played because I enjoyed the game. I quite basketball when I got to middle school because I wasn't interested anymore. Fashion became a huge part of my life. Gemini is my Zodiac sign, it define me about a person, it as define me as a twin. Our birthday is May 22. We are fraternal twin, we do not like alike, but we resemble each other. My twin is the evil side of me I believe because I'm too nice of a person and I'm very sensitive. She my Yin to my Yang.
Outside of my Calla Lily flower are picture that aren't transparent because these are image of what people see me as. I put picture of famous people such as Zendaya and Aaliyah because family members and close friends always tell me I remind them of these two. I never really notice, I hear it all the time even from people I don't know. I put Skylar Diggins and a basketball because people always asked me "Do you play basketball?" and I always answer with the same answer no, but I used too or they would ask me "Do you want to play basketball?". I mean I love basketball, but I can't picture myself playing it my whole life. I put pictures of me when I was in these fashion shows I volunteered for because this is what people always view me as. I love modeling because I get to wear these lovely designed clothes people I know design and want me to wear to show to others. I'm still trying to figure out who I am because I always have two different views of anything and I cannot ever pick a side, I agree with both. I'm shy, but outgoing. I love being alone, but I love the company. I'm nice, but I'm always angry. I'm happy, but sometimes depress. It's like I will always have a different side from myself and that's what makes me, Me and I will never change Who I am for Who? Me?.

Museum Essay #2

Dear Rodriguez Calero

I would like to start with thank you for creating this cut n' mix group exhibit. I loved all of the pieces that were created, I couldn't choose one, so I decided to write you this letter about this entire exhibit and ask you a couple of questions. When I analyzed the exhibit I saw that you used a lot of shapes that were geometric and organic. There were a lot of cut out images of people body parts, but there were a lot of overlapping these images to create an illusion of depth.Colors line warm and cool color were being used on the images, I guess to give it a feel to the artwork. There were also patterns being used for the shapes and some what of the colors. How were the materials used? Was there a certain way the materials were used? If so why? Why did you used these materials? Did you use magazines? What type of magazines? Did you used the same images you cut out twice?. I think you made your work from cutting out different images from different magazines to try and get different body parts from different people,so you were able to mix and match. I also believe you used Crayons, Chalk, Water colors, and Pencils. I notice you images on the canvas when you pasted the images you wanted, so you was able to create a different person from the person you cut out from the magazine. For example the "Street Moves" image was a cut out image of Nas famous rapper from Hip Hop. The image was so mix I could tell if it was Nas because he looked like another person because there were different images overlapping him. Why did you mix people faces up? Did you not want them to know who that person is?. I thought it was a good idea to mix the cut out because it give people more time to stand there and figure out who the cut out image is. Did you use a lot of famous people in this Cut n' Mix exhibit. When I looked through your exhibit I noticed a lot of famous people I could point out just but looking at their mouth and eyes. I believe you where trying to communicate with people who watch t.v, listen to music, watch dancers, love fashion, and art, because you had a little bit of everything everyone liked or love. What is the main idea of this exhibit? Does it has a purpose? What is it?

Thank You,

Metropolitan Museum Essay

Painting one artist named Pierre Bonnard, French (1867-1947). Artwork title "Seated Nude", 1919, The medium is oil on canvas."The viewer encounters the Seated Nude form a level perspective, or perhaps slightly below. By resting her weight behind her right hand, she gently thrusts her shoulder upward, while her faintly arching back pushes her breasts forward. Her downward face shifts her hair to shield her eyes." Quoted from the wall text in the museum. The artist uses a lot of warm colors to create a loving feel for this painting. He painted her body color two different shades of orange and gave it value to show what needed to have light(to show how important it is) and what needed to have a shadow. The background colors are a little warm(orange) and cool color (blue) to symbolize that this painting has two different emotion to is which are tension and somewhat relaxation. The bed this woman is seated on has a pattern of orange, blue, and green, then there this bright white bed spread to try and give his painting a happy feeling, but notice that the painting itself has a pattern because it repeats in colors. Lines are a big part of this painting. There are vertical lines which is her arm that is behind her, this symbols strength she has, and horizontal lines which are her arm that is placed in front of her and her legs that shows how calm her body is. It also give a feel that she is struggling with something in her life and as she sit their nude thinking about it, she tries to relax. The style of this painting is abstract because the woman's face is blurry, so it's hard to see her face. A woman does sit on her bed nude to think about issues they are going through. This painting is how a male view a woman when she is is going through issue and how he think she should look sitting on her bed. In a very sexual way.

Painting two artist named Gustave Moreau French, Paris (1826-1898). Artwork title "Oedipus and the Sphinx,1864. The medium is Oil on canvas."It represents the Greek hero Oedipus confronting the Sphinx outside Thebes: Remains of victims who failed the text appear at the bottom right. Moreau's mythological theme and archaizing style reflect his admiration for Ingres's 1808 version of the same subject and for the work of early Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna". Quoted from the wall text in the museum. The painter Moreau uses a lot of beautiful colors that describe what's going on in his painting. These colors are primary red, blue and yellow, also secondary colors green, purple and brown. There are two human being and a woman who represented as a Sphinx. The man who is Oedipus in a green cloth and in his hand he holds a red spare and in front of him Sphinx with her blue and white tall wings. Below them a man that is not much in the viewer's sight, but you can see his strong foot and his hand gripping a huge brown rock. The scenery is a natural scene with huge rocks in the background. The lines in this painting are vertical/strength, and horizontal/calm. The style is representational because the man looks real and the natural scenery is a very real look it gives, but it's also abstract because the woman is represented as a Sphinx and the viewer can't see the face of the other man.

These two painting are similar because of the mediums oil on canvas and they are both done by a French artist. Also the styles of the painting are somewhat similar because they both have abstract style, but the other has both abstract and representational. The visual elements are similar because they both uses lines and space  (foreground, and background). These oil painting uses different color forms. The first painting uses a lot of patterns and warm and cool colors and the second painting uses primary and secondary colors no pattern.  The differences between these two are the content and the meaning of the painting. The meaning of the first painting shows a woman nude seated on her bed, but it's almost as if she is struggling with her life, but in a male's point of view because to a woman she would of had night clothes on seated on her bed thinking about what she's thinking about. To a man he uses her as sexual and vulnerable, in the second painting the woman is represented as a Sphinx and this shows the strength of the woman and how royal she is to a man. I choose these painting because they got my full attention and I looked at them both differently from each other. Viewing these painting from different eras showed that at the time of these painting, there was something happening in history either it was historical or just person. For example the first painting was in the year 1919 and in that year women voting act was happening so this gave me the idea of the woman struggling with something in her life because all women were having a hard time dealing with their life. I'm not really sure why these painting were in the museum, but I'm guessing it's because it meant something very valuable and they wanted to share it with different viewers.

Blog post #4

A Little Taste Outside of Love. Mickalene Thomas (American, born 1971). A Little Taste Outside of Love, 2007. Acrylic, enamel and rhinestones on wood panel, Overall: 108 x 144 in. (274.3 x 365.8 cm). Brooklyn Museum, Gift of Giulia Borghese and Designated Purchase Fund,

I noticed that its very rare to find a self portrait of an African American Woman, because all self portraits portray the man's idea or fantasies of how a woman should look. This artist isn't a men, but a female who shows that their is more to a woman then light color skin, blond hair, and blue eyes. Mickalene Thomas quote from her contemporary "Here she casts an African American woman as leading lady in an updated version of a longestablished visual archetype—a sexualized female subject seemingly caught unaware as she reclines passively in her own beauty. In doing so, the  lounges in art, attended by a black maidservant." There where I connected with her because when I seen these painting of what a woman should look like caught my attention because I admittedly question why is their any self portrait painting of African American females and the idea of how they look. So I was on a search to find a painting of how a men view an African American, in which I couldn't find, but an African American women who did it her self  portrait of how a women should look like in a way no other would of thought of and did a pretty good job at it.

In this painting it's shows a lot of Achromatic color, but also gives off a primary and secondary color. As the bold black lines outlines her body to stress that this is a black female and the other line that goes in many direction; vertical/strength, horizontal/calm, diagonal/action to show a set of emotion. The negative space is more than the positive space which is the object in this painting to show that the female is the main object you should look at and take in what you see. This artist puts in her own touches of pattern of black and white to symbol in my opinion African Americans and White Americans. As for the style of this painting is abstract because the painting kinda gives of a distorted manner, her lips are huge and they way she wear her hair in a Afro people does wear their hair like that they way they used to back then. I also thought the style was representational because you can obviously see that it's a women siting.

In this selections from Way of Seeing by John Berger is about how men and women idea of how a women should look like is different. Men would create a painting of a nude women to show that women should look something like this because that what they want. Women would create something similar but try to find it in a respectful way then a man.  As John Berger quote disagree with the painting I chosen "It is worth noticing that in other non-European traditions – in Indian art, Persian art, African art, Pre- Colombian art – nakedness is never supine in this way. And if, in these traditions, the theme of a work is sexual attraction, it is likely to show active sexual love as between two people, the woman as active as the man.", because this men would not had thought that an African American women would've painted a nude black women in the same position as the original nude painting of women.

Ballerina

The Dancing Ballerina
This is paint thrown on the elevator wall. This has been there for some weeks now and I have taken a picture of it while in it, and I never notice it can be a art picture if I get the right angle and edit it. I named it "The Dancing Ballerina because if you look at the bright white you can almost see one leg down and a smaller leg kicking up with just a little of the arms spread out.
When I edited this picture I wanted to show some visual elements which are Lines, shapes, space, warm color, Achromatic, and Value. As you can see here in this photograph I used a black and white color to show achromatic, but I brighten the red up to show warmth when you look at the photo. There are diagonal lines to show action of the dancing ballerina and horizontal line to show the calm feel of this photo. Value and space plays a huge role in this photography because the value gives my photo the light it needs to show what I want my audience to notice and the spaces which are negative (the background) and positive (the main object) gives my photo what it needs. I would say that my photography has texture because the positive space looks like you can feel that it may look smooth and there is also a pattern in the background the negative space that repeats a lot in this photo.
When some look at this photo they would only see paint on an elevator wall, but for other they might see a creature, an object, or a shape. I see a Ballerina, I have no clue of why, but I'm guessing it's because before I took this photo I read an article on Facebook about an African American Ballerina named Misty Copeland , on June 30, 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in American Ballet Theater 75-year history. As an African American female things like this would be hard to achieve, but her hard work and dedication overcame her obstacles and made her who she is now through what she love. I admire her achievement and hard work because it tells girls who are a different shade that they can achieve greatness no matter what. Misty Copeland way of art is through the motions of her body which is called Ballet and Ballet is a type of art.

This is Misty in art form:

Terrifying Terrain

Terrifying Terrain

Terrifying Terrain

Artist: Elizabeth Murray (American, Chicago, Illinois 1940–2007 Washington County, New York )
Date: 1989–90
Medium: Oil on shaped canvases
Classification: Paintings
From: The Metropolitan Museum of Arts

It was kind of hard for me to find a painting that catches my eye, but I found one. Elizabeth Murray's painting "Terrifying Terrain" that looks 3D, and has a overlapping feel to it. This is very interesting to me because when I first saw it reminded me of a broken compass I seen in a movie, shapes like triangular broken metal pieces. This painting symbolize "a rock-climbing trip in Montana" explained by Elizabeth she said that these are pieces of the rocks overlapping that has broken off as she climbed to the top. As she explained the colors she picked  "Here, a bright red dress floats incongruously over the center of the dark green landscape, adding a surreal note and suggesting a hidden layer of meaning."  This shows that she uses color to some how connect to when she was at her trip in Montana.

Elizabeth Murray uses a lot of Visual Elements in her painting to describe her emotions and ideas. She uses a lot of lines such as; vertical lines that's symbols her strength, horizontal lines which shows her calmness, and diagonal lines results of her actions. These line shows her emotions in her painting. Implied 3D shapes, shapes that are geometric such as the triangular shapes and the organic shapes that goes with the flow of the painting. This painting shows a lot of negative space, but a positive space also. As it is mention this painting has an overlapping feel to it because it reflects on the rocks she climbed. There are some value in this painting the light is bright colors which are were the white is and the darker parts of the painting is where there are no light. This painter uses primary colors red, blue and yellow to show warm colors(yellow, and red) and cool colors(blue). When you look at this painting the texture that's implied is a rough feel because there are pointy pieces of this object which is a painting.

Water Logs

I found this very interesting and confusing because I was wondering who made this and or put this here. I was at my brother's neighborhood in Dumbo park. This is a 2D photography of standing darkish and greyish logs, as you see here the logs start from bigger then goes up to smaller logs. I think the creator made this to create places for human purpose , give tangible form to the unknown and feeling, and extra ordinary versions of ordinary objects.
